Why does editing matter?
We’ve heard the debate so often–Why do editors matter? What do they really do, anyway? Why should I pay for that service when I can read it myself? We get it. Editing is one of those functions that you only notice if you don’t have it, but you never notice if you do. And usually, you can’t tell the forest for the trees if you’re knee-deep in the wood. It takes someone who hasn’t stared at that project (manuscript, presentation, article, paper) a thousand times to see all the issues that your tired eyes simply skim over.
The problem is simple: Typos are a distraction.
Typos take away from your message. When your audience gets stuck on an out-of-place symbol, a misspelled word or an inappropriate phrase, they get turned off. That is a moment stolen from your message. While nothing in life is totally without flaws, editing helps us get closer to perfection. That seemingly small effort might mean the difference between a buy-in and a bounce.
Now, a typo here or there might not be all that offensive. But proofreading is the last step in the editorial process. Editors can help with so much more…
Your message matters. Editors can help ensure that your message is on target. So often in life we think we’ve said something that never left our brains, much less our mouths. The same is true in crafting communications of all kinds. While it isn’t necessarily the editor’s job to come up with content, it is our job to make sure you have the right context. Putting your message the right way is pivotal to appealing to your audience. Editors help ensure you have established the appropriate order, balance and tone. AND we make sure nothing is missing!
Crossing the t’s and dotting the i’s, editors are skilled professionals who verify that the “who,” “what,” “where,” “when” and “why” are all there so your audience comes straight to you.
